Sheffield Young Carers: seeing the difference support makes

A digital version of the charity's paper outcome tool, so young carers can see their own progress and the charity can show its impact.

Sheffield Young Carers supports young people aged 8 to 25 who look after someone at home, and young people affected by a family member's drug or alcohol use.

To see how each young person is getting on, the charity uses a paper tool called My Life, My Journey. A young person scores how things are going across the areas of their life from 0 to 10, sets a goal of their own, records their caring hours and writes about what has changed, then does it again later in their time with the charity. Each completed sheet is then typed up by hand before anyone can see the change across the whole group.

Two jobs at once

The digital version has two jobs to do at once. It has to give a young person a genuine moment to reflect and see their own progress, and it has to give the charity clean evidence that its support is what made the difference.

Sessions happen on a tablet, with someone who might be eight or might be twenty-five. In the version we are building, the life wheel is something a young person scores by touch, with their goal beside it.

Evidence without the typing

For the charity, the aim is that every answer lands in one place as it is given, so the picture across every young person it supports is there without anyone retyping a sheet.

This is work for our own city, built with the people who will use it.
